Course: DSN303B18 Essential Design with Graham Blackburn
You may have begun woodworking because you enjoy using tools and making things, but there is more to woodworking than well-cut joints and fine finishes. True success requires understanding how to properly fulfill functional requirements, which construction techniques to use, and — perhaps most importantly — how to design something that looks good in an appropriate style.
‘Essential Design’ will give you the knowledge to ensure your next project is a true success, whatever your current level of technique may be and whether you prefer handtools or power tools or a mix of both. You will become familiar with ergonomics, wood properties, different methods of joinery, simple model-making, basic drawing skills, together with the techniques that have informed the most successful furnituremakers over the centuries. You do not need a ‘good eye’, but rather an introduction to the underlying ‘secrets’ of proper proportions, balance, movement, color, pattern, and stylistic compatibility.
