Course: FTW300A18D - Fundamentals of Traditional Woodworking Inclusive, day class

Southwest School of Woodworking

FTW300A18D Fundamentals of Traditional Woodworking Inclusive Day class
The Fundamentals of Traditional Woodworking series is designed to give the beginning student a solid foundation in basic hand tool woodworking. Machinery and power tools are introduced to complement the hand tools. However, we put emphasis on competency with planes, chisels, and other non-powered tools and techniques. This is one continuous course, and encompasses all of the three Fundamental courses in the series.

The course progresses from learning the basics of sharpening and hand tool use through the making of a small bench and finally a beautiful “period correct” Shaker style table with a dovetail drawer, tapered legs and mortise and tenoned aprons. All projects are made in solid wood.

The recommended text to accompany this series is Woodworking Basics – Mastering the Essentials of Craftsmanship, by Peter Korn (2003, The Taunton Press). While the Fundamentals series does not follow this book precisely, many of the techniques are the same and the projects are similar.

This hands-on course is for the beginning woodworker or anyone who wishes to review fundamental skills and get a solid foundation in methods of fine craftsmanship. Subjects covered include workshop safety, wood and wood movement, the use and maintenance of basic hand tools (planes, chisels, etc,), sharpening edge tools, measuring and marking, and basic joinery.

Skills practiced: Shop safety, hand tool use and maintenance, edge sharpening, measuring, marking out, gluing, hand cut dovetails and mortise and tenons
